Its current name is due to the fact that the image of the Senhora do Ó was transferred here from the chapel of Porta da Ribeira, which was demolished in 1821.

The Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Ó was remodeled in the nineteenth century because of damage suffered during the wars of independence.

Inside, notice the carved altarpiece of the early eighteenth century by João da Costa. The chapel is not exactly open to the public, but can be visited in September during the Feast of Nossa Senhora of O.

If you are interested in doing so, you must contact the St. Nicholas Church for more information.

The post Capela da Nossa Senhora do Ó first appeared on Welcome Porto.

The Recolhimento do Ferro (a religious charity) moved here from its Rua Escura location. The Recolhimento do Ferro name comes from an iron (ferro) beam that crossed the door of this simple church and it was said that convicts who could reach it were not executed.

The tiles of this monument, which is located near the Bolhão Market and metro station, were restored in 1982. Although simple, the interior is equally interesting, ‘hiding’ the image of Nossa Senhora das Almas, (Our Lady of the Souls), which dates back to when the chapel was first built.

Note that the Chapel of Souls is in the middle of the Rua de Santa Catarina, one of the best known shopping street in the city.

The post Capela das Almas first appeared on Welcome Porto.

Built in 1554, the Chapel of Alfaiates houses a clay image of Nossa Senhora de Agosto (Our Lady of August) – the name by which is also known this small temple near Praça da Batalha – outer facade. It was designed and executed by Manuel Luis and was originally stood in front of the door to the Cathedral.

It is a testimony to the transition from the late Gothic to the mannerism of Flemish inspiration. In the main chancel, you will find at the centre of the altarpiece, the limestone statue of Our Lady of August.

And to the right of the main altar, is a wooden image, dated from the seventeenth century, of S. Bom Homem (St. Good Man), patron of Tailors.

It was at the opening of the Terreiro da Sé, in 1935, which led to demolition works in this area, that the Chapel of Tailors was expropriated by the City Council of Porto, having been rebuilt in 1953 in its existing location.

It has been a National Monument since 1927 and has information available in Portuguese, Spanish, English and French.

The post Capela dos Alfaiates first appeared on Welcome Porto.

Located in an old part of the city, adjacent to several alleys and typical streets, it is one of the oldest monuments of Porto and Portugal. It was built in the 12th and 13th centuries. It combines several architectural styles- Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque.

As an example of the Romanesque style there is the façade and an extremely beautiful rose window. The cloister and S. João Evangelista chapel illustrate the Gothic style.

The architect Nasoni made several modifications in the Baroque period, like the galilee of the lateral façade.

From the baroque one must also highlight the main altar, in silver. Already in the 19th century, there is a sculpture by Teixeira Lopes, in the Baptismal Chapel, which deserves to be admired.

The Cathedral has 3 organs and fine acoustics, which makes the concerts magical, particularly at night and by the candles, as in the Christmas season. Find out about concert schedules and which ones are free.

The post Catedral do Porto first appeared on Welcome Porto.

Construction for the Church of Lapa began in the second half of the eighteenth century, but the Neoclassical style building went through minor modifications over time. It belongs to the Brotherhood of Nossa Senhora da Lapa, which was established in 1755.

Construction began the following year, but the towers were only completed in 1863. Inside, the church keeps the heart of King Pedro IV. It was given by the monarch who was keen to leave it to the city of Porto as a way to recognize the support that its population provided during the Portuguese Civil War. The heart of Dom Pedro IV is kept inside an urn that opens with five keys and crafted to resemble the original urn that transported the organ to the city. It is examined every 10 years to check its condition and it was last seen in 2009.

The eighteenth century image of Nossa Senhora da Lapa in the imposing altarpiece and the pipe organ designed by the German Georg Jann are other interesting features of this building, which was classified as Monument of Public Interest.

The Portuguese writers Camilo Castelo Branco and Soares de Passos are buried in the Lapa Cemetery, contiguous to the church.

The post Igreja da Lapa first appeared on Welcome Porto.

The Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição was built between 1938 and 1947. It has a monumental granite façade, with two massive towers, one more than 50 metres high, and a front yard with white and black pavement. In the church, look for the set of nine stained glass windows representing nine choirs of Angels and the chime with eighteen bells.

You can climb the tallest of the two towers. Upstairs, visitors have one of the highest panoramic views of the city and one can actually see beyond the center of Porto, to the mouth of the Douro River, and to the city of Vila Nova de Gaia. The staircase is magnificent and you’ll climb past the clock mechanism and the tower bells.
