Catedral do Porto
Description
Located in an old part of the city, adjacent to several alleys and typical streets, it is one of the oldest monuments of Porto and Portugal. It was built in the 12th and 13th centuries. It combines several architectural styles- Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque.
As an example of the Romanesque style there is the façade and an extremely beautiful rose window. The cloister and S. João Evangelista chapel illustrate the Gothic style.
The architect Nasoni made several modifications in the Baroque period, like the galilee of the lateral façade.
From the baroque one must also highlight the main altar, in silver. Already in the 19th century, there is a sculpture by Teixeira Lopes, in the Baptismal Chapel, which deserves to be admired.
The Cathedral has 3 organs and fine acoustics, which makes the concerts magical, particularly at night and by the candles, as in the Christmas season. Find out about concert schedules and which ones are free.
