The Casa do Infante owes its name to the fact of being the birthplace of Infante D. Henrique, the Navigator. It is a set of buildings built through time to settle the services of the Crown in Porto. Its history goes back to 1325, when King Afonso, the 4th, ordered the construction of the Crown’s Warehouse, against the will of the Bishop, D. Hugo, Lord of the Borough.

The building was renewed and musealized and presently it offers a set of diversified services: Museum, Municipal Historical Archive, Thematic Library about Porto, Memory Room, Exhibition Room and an Auditorium. The museum includes a ‘Prince Henry the Navigator and the New Worlds’ section where visitors can learn about the Prince by examining his iconography diachronically up until the present day and by revisiting the chief milestones in the Portuguese maritime discoveries, with a special focus on the role of the city and people of Porto.

They can also learn about the Roman occupation from the 4th-5th century remains; the Alfândega Régia, or royal customs house, built by King Afonso IV in 1325; and the Casa da Moeda, or mint, which began operating in 1369.

The post Casa do Infante – Museu first appeared on Welcome Porto.

The House Museum was rehabilitated to host the museum valence and has a space for temporary exhibitions, an auditorium, a cafeteria and a shop.
It is an eighteenth century building typical of the urban planning reforms carried out in the city by the Almadas. In 1864, the Porto City Council placed in the middle of the first floor a plaster oval medallion, decorated with garlands of laurel leaves, with an inscription in honor of the author of “Frei Luís de Sousa” and “Travels in my land “.

Almeida Garrett, who also has the right to a statue on the Aliados Avenue right in front of the City Hall, was also a statesman, diplomat, orator and reformer of the national theater and introducer of the Romanticism in Portugal. On the street and neighboring arteries, there are several restaurants and trendy pubs with snacks that are worth knowing.

The post Casa Museu Almeida Garrett first appeared on Welcome Porto.

S. Bento Station is much more than just a place of arrivals and departures, of people rushing to catch the next train. It is something worthwhile to watch in detail, to visit. Many tourists look for it due to its beauty.

Both the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century were characterised by an expansion of the railways. The station occupies the place of a convent (Convento de S. Bento de Avé Maria), justifying its name.

From an artistic point of view, we highlight the approximately 20 000 tiles by the painter Jorge Colaço. They show scenes from the History of Portugal, everyday life and the evolution of transport. The light enters through large stained glass, which combine glass and cast iron.

From the architectural point of view, the building has a French influence. Because of its charm, it is a must-see visit.

The Monastery of Serra do Pilar, in Gaia has been a Cultural Heritage of Humanity site since 1996 and provides an unequalled view of the city of Porto.

Its construction began in 1538 and it was completed in 1670. It housed the Augustinian Friars of the Monastery of Grijo until it became occupied by the Liberal army during the Civil War of 1832-1834, during which it was damaged.

The Royal Brotherhood of Nossa Senhora do Pilar, established in 1834 and, later, the Group of Friends of the Monastery of Serra do Pilar, created in 1925, helped save the monastery.

The church with its circular floor plan is unique in Portugal, as is the Cloister, which is also circular and is lined with 36 Ionic columns. It currently houses North Heritage.

In the cloister, note the statue of D. Afonso Henriques, by Soares dos Reis, which is the plaster version of the one in bronze at the Guimarães Castle. It is worth taking the guided tour which includes a climb to the dome.

It’s a 100 steps to the circular terrace that surrounds the dome of the church, but the panoramic view over Porto is spectacular.

The post Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar first appeared on Welcome Porto.

The MMIPO – Museu da Misericórdia do Porto is located right in the heart of Porto’s historic centre, in Rua das Flores, in the building that served as headquarters for this charitable institution from the mid-16th century to 2013. Over the centuries, the building underwent a number of renovation projects, the last of which was to adapt it for use as a museum. The purpose of the museum is to tell the story of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Porto and the purposes of this institution.

At the same time, it displays its art collections and makes available a set of resources that relate the memory and identity of the organisation, projecting it into the future. A visit to the museum also provides an opportunity to learn more about the past and the present of this area of the city.

The route through the museum includes the 16th-century Misericórdia Church, which underwent major works in the 18th century under the leadership of Nicolau Nasoni, and the Gallery of the Benefactors, an example of the iron-and-glass architecture of the city.

The post Museu da Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto first appeared on Welcome Porto.
