Igreja de São Francisco de Assis
Description
The Igreja de S. Francisco de Assis (Church of St. Francis of Assisi), commonly known as Igreja de S. Francisco (St. Francis Church), is located in the historic centre of Porto. It is the most important representative of the Gothic style in the city.
The construction of the church began in the 14th century. The main façade contains a richly crafted Gothic rose window. The church structure, which maintains the original plan, includes 3 naves and 5 aisles. The main nave is the largest with the altar on its top. The interior, rich in gilt carving from the 17th and 18th centuries, illustrates the Baroque style. Of note, for its beauty, is the Tree of Jesse and the Catacomb Cemetery.
It has been considered National Monument since 1910 and Cultural Heritage of Humanity (UNESCO) since 1996.
